Review: Gorefest – False

Album cover

Gorefest’s False is undeniably awesome, and so is the album cover!

As the first review for my blog, I feel that its necessary to hit this one first. Unlike their following albums, Gorefest‘s False is essential to the entire genre, and very much a classic.

Essentially, this record is an assault on modern society and its irrational outlook. When listening to this record, the story of Albert Camus’ The Stranger comes to mind, as if the record is the album that plays in the sub-conscious of an absurdist.

Oh, and about the music itself; it’s phenomenal. Grooving riffs slide over each other seamlessly, and while there is a very big influence from older metal styles while keeping a distinctly “Gorefest” element throughout. Guitar is very communicative and organic here, and base excellently complements it.  The tempo is varied effectively as well, relying on both slower, plodding riffs and bursting sections. Ed Warby’s drumming is fantastic as well, hitting all the right parts to maximize communication. It almost feels like a power-struggle between guitar and drums because both are just so stellar. That would be the case if not for the vocal performance though; they churn and and blast through the song, forcing the band’s message into your brain, which is now prone due to the instrumental onslaught.

If anything, this record an anthem of anger and confusion towards our world. Although it was released in 1992, its message still holds true. This record definitely deserves a spot in the death metal pantheon.
